today is my last day in spain. there are new adventures waiting in the united states. enjoy this recent picture i took of the montgo driving from denia. i'll miss those windy steep drives along the costa blanca. hasta pronto amigos! ciao javea y denia.

the works of chuck close have always intrigued me. the first time i came across one of his self-portraits was at the national gallery of art in washington d.c. i find it fascinating that his paintings are both abstract & realistic. to learn more about the artist, check out his site.

a bunch of these were made because i saved the scraps of a project on studio furniture that i constructed recently. i have a whole box of future mini paintings. can't wait!

carolyn brady

this evening while i worked in my studio an old art flier from 1997 that i've enjoyed so much caught my eye again. the piece that captivates me is a watercolor by carolyn brady titled, "jekll & lutyens at hestercombe/somerset, 1996-97". the image i speak of is a realistic depiction of a black iron metal gate/door opening to reveal rough tiled floors leading to a bean trellis stretching towards beautiful natural light. simply superb. the only information available on carolyn brady was from the nancy hoffman gallery's website. in the meantime enjoy this eye warming piece titled, "red raspberry hydrangea/new york, 2001".

found this lovely madonna bust on wood paneling at a boot sale in denia. this piece has inspired me to paint more on found objects and scrap material. a great solution to my situation with stretchers.

"rue of whirl"

this new piece was a joy to work on. the white petals are a pattern from a memory of my childhood. i grew up in my grandmother's grocery store, i guess out of boredom my grandmother and/or my mother would doodle on paper to pass the time. i would see these patterns on cardboard boxes around the store.

just an update on how the madonna mixed media piece is turning out. close to being finished, just a few things here & there. i'm really enjoying the process and looking forward to working on similar pieces.

check out this piece i found along the streets of valencia. not sure if it's a collection of artists or one. i like the creature spewing red something with the daggers in the heart.

what a great find this mixed media piece was when i stumbled across it at a flea market/boot sale in denia recently. painting on a found object has been of interest to me since it's been so difficult to find stretchers to stretch my own canvas. i'm liking this new venture. as a kid in catholic school i would stare at these sculptures everyday for many years studying their outlines and subdued colors. now i have my own interpretation. be back with the final take.
